Care for your wood fence

To protect your wood fence—picket, privacy, or split rail—you will need to either paint or stain it. At Fence Enterprises, we recommend you use pressure treated pine or cedar for any wood fence. Both need protection, but a quality waterproof stain every 2 to 3 years should keep your fence in good repair for many years. It also is important to keep grass and weeds trimmed around your fence to protect the lower few inches from moisture and insects.

Walk your fence regularly as well and make needed repairs as soon as possible. Broken or chipped boards and loose nails invite insects and further deterioration that will shorten the life of your fence.

The question often is asked whether paint or stain is better protection for a wood fence. In some cases, it is personal preference, but either will work to protect wood from mold and rot, insect infestation, and the changing temperatures of the seasons.

A couple things to keep in mind as you choose protection for your fence:

  • Cedar planks need to breathe, so stain is always the better choice if you have used cedar for your fence.

  • Wait at least one month before staining or painting any fence to allow the wood to dry. For pressure treated wood, waiting 3 to 4 months is recommended.

  • Wood absorbs stain, so it is protected deep down. Plan to power wash and restain every 2 to 3 years for maximum protection.

  • Paint will protect a wood fence for up to 6 years with minimal maintenance. Plan to scrape and sand before repainting for maximum protection.

The protection you choose for your wood fence should be based on the look you want for your home and yard and how much time you have to invest in its care. Our professionals can provide details and guidance on your fence design, including custom designs, materials available, and recommended protection and maintenance so you get many years of enjoyment from your wood fence.
